I had this beer over the weekend – Mikkeller’s 1000 IBU. It’s got an 87 on Beer Advocate.
I didn’t write about this right away because I didn’t feel like it was really anything special, which I was a bit disappointed about. Given it’s high listed level of IBUs, I really thought it was going to blow me away, but it tasted like a higher end IPA that you could get for much less. If I had my way, I’d rather spend $10 on a six-pack of Founder’s Double Trouble than $13 on a 13-ounce bottle of 1000 IBU.
Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a bad IPA, but there just wasn’t anything to really separate it from others, especially given the price. The smell and taste was perfectly citrus-y and I enjoyed it, but I just fell short.
I did have the beer with some blue cheese and honey spread on toasted baguette, which was good. The bitter and sweet of both the beer and food balanced each other nicely. That’s probably the best part of everything.
