Foothills’ Sexual Chocolate (yes, please)

Oh yes. This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

I bought the last bottle available in Durham of Foothill Brewery’s Sexual Chocolate  a few weeks ago and I’ve been waiting to have it with something special. Special indeed. Not counting that something special, it’s a 92 Beer Advocate.

When I bought the bottle, I knew I wanted to have it with something especially chocolate, so I made a homemade chocolate “lava” cake to have with the beer. It is as amazing as I’d hoped it to be  – on both counts.

The beer itself, which I’ve had on tap multiple times, didn’t lose any of its flavor from bottling. It’s a wonderful chocolate flavor mixed with one of my favorite stouts I’ve had. Best of all, having it with the chocolate cake only made it better.

Because of all the chocolate flavor I was having at once, the cake neutralized the beer flavor and really brought out a wonderful malty taste. But then the underlying coffee tones of the beer came through, followed by the great (normal) stout once again and finally the chocolate after I finished the cake. While that sentence makes it seem simplistic, the complexity of the beer is nothing close. It’s a wonderful chocolately smell mixed with a flavor – which may surprise some considering the roughly 10 percent alcohol. Through and through, this beer is a great experience.

Needless to say, this beer lacks nothing from what you’ve heard. It’s worth waiting in the cold for hours and it’s worth waiting for weeks to try it with some great pairing. While I don’t have a lot of imperial stouts, this is easily among the best I’ve had and would recommend. It smells great, tastes great and pairs great.

What else could you want?
