Sam Adams Longshot – Derf’s Secret Alt

Every year I look forward to Sam Adam’s Longshot series, which is their annual mass production of a few winning homebrewed beers. I’ve gone through one of the three winners so far – Derf’s Secret Alt. It’s got an 87 on Beer Advocate.

I’ll keep this one short and sweet, since the beer essentially mimicked one I just had. This beer was good, malty with a good amount of kick, although you’ll never know this beer is 9.3 percent ABV. To me, this just tastes like a smoother/mild version of Monk’s Blood. Nearly all the aspects of the smell and taste seemed the same to me, although I could easily drink two of these alt beers while I could probably just do one at a time of Monk’s Blood.

It’s always worth getting a six-pack of the Longshot winners, but you can just as well get an idea of what this beer tastes like – perhaps in a more “intense” form – from the 21st Amendment brew.
